 Christmas B.C.

Our December Advent series starts today featuring predictions about the birth of Jesus.  Christmas began long before the night when Jesus was born dividing time into “B.C.” and “A.D.”  The Old Testament contains more than 300 predictions about the Messiah.  Here are four that we will study:

December 3          The Promise      Genesis 3:15

December 10        The Names           Isaiah 9:1-7

December 17        The Place             Micah 5:1-5

December 22        The Plan               Isaiah 7:14

            300 Messianic Predictions

During this advent season, we are seeking to learn more about the 300 Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament (OT).  Most of them were written hundreds and even thousands of years before Christmas.  Jesus fulfilled all of them!  The nature of Jesus’ birth, life and death was not some sort of coincidence.

Lee Strobel’s excellent book, “The Case for Christ,” notes that the probability of just eight of these predictions being fulfilled in one person is one in one hundred million billion. Mathematician Peter Stoner took it a notch further. He calculated that the probability of one person fulfilling 48 of the 300 Messianic predications in the OT would be: one in a trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion. And Jesus fulfilled not 48 but all 300 of them!

This fact has gone a long way for many to conclude that the Bible is trustworthy. No committee of authors could have made this up or orchestrated this as a fabrication. It also tells us that our faith in Jesus Christ as the Messiah rests on solid ground.  These fulfilled predictions tell us that our faith in the baby at Bethlehem is well-placed. To be sure, there is still faith involved.  But some would argue that it takes more faith to believe Jesus wasn’t Who He claimed to be, than to simply trust what the Bible says.
